Kostas Murkudis: The Blend of Fashion & Art

Aetius Gular·April 21, 2026

Kostas Murkudis is a German designer of Greek heritage - a dual identity which is subtly portrayed throughout the years, in his collections. His work often reflects and blends the German design language and Greek artistry. Kostas was first widely recognized in the fashion industry for being Helmut Lang’s first assistant between 1986-1993. Until launching his eponymous label in 1996.

From a young age, Kostas had recognized the true power of fashion and art. But, during his tenure at Helmut Lang, he had absorbed Lang’s minimalistic approach, in a time period when most fashion houses focused on maximalism. Leading Kostas to develop his own distinctive design language.

In 2013, Murkudis decided to donate large amounts of his archive and original designs/prototypes to three museums: MMK (Museum für Moderne Kunst), Palais Galliera, and the Kyoto Costume Institute. Further engraving his deep belief that fashion belongs within the same realm as art.

Ultimately, Kostas Murkudis stands as a designer who operates intimately and profoundly within the fashion and art world. His work does not demand attention through spectacle, but instead rewards those who seek depth and intention. Through his ongoing exploration of form, material, and meaning, he continues to demonstrate that fashion, at its best, is not just about clothing, but about the ideas.
